Set up a training program.

Most people with disabilities need to work and want to work. But for a variety of reasons many are unable to find jobs that match their abilities. Those reasons may have little to do with the disability. Rather, they're often the result of ignorance, misinformation, and a lack of training for people in the employment and employment services arena.

Focus on Ability is an information and training initiative aimed directly at that problem. Its goal is to encourage and promote the employment of people with disabilities by providing a first-hand and candid perspective on the topic of disability and work. At the program's core are compelling documentary-style video segments in which we meet and get acquainted with people with disabilities and employers as they speak movingly and powerfully in their own voices about their needs, expectations, experiences, and successes.

This program is based on extensive research that included personal in-depth interviews with a wide range of people with disabilities. The research findings and the program itself were vetted by an panel of disability experts and advocates, a majority of whom were themselves people with disabilities. The research also included similar in-depth interviews with employers representing large, medium, and small companies. And finally, a great many employees across the Minnesota WorkForce Center (One-Stop) System participated in the research and creation of Focus on Ability and contributed their valuable perspectives to the program.
